What's Wrong with Kids Today?

They're Smarter than We Are?
No.They're Different. And that's OK.
Remember the old song? It's about play time. Free play time. Like free form crochet. Where nothing you choose to play is wrong. Where you get to try out all that you've learned until it becomes yours. Until it's a part of you. We seem to have expected children to come with a set of directions ever since Dr. Spock. Put down the book. And just listen to the children.
"Look down my rain barrel,
"Slide down my cellar door,
"And we'll be jolly friends forever more."It takes a village. It takes listening to the other, and wondering as you speak, what the other might say. It takes the Other.

Joathan Lear is the only one of these for which I had memorized the link, so it's the only one up tonight. I'll find the files and put them up tomorrow. They are all already on the site. jeanne

On grades, on competitiveness. On Summerhill, at least recently, I think. He's right about most of this. Though I think he takes some of it a mite too seriously. Maybe because I've accepted my limitations, and he's quite a bit younger.- Jonathan Lear
Great ideas on the arrogance of knowingness. Love his piece on the Wolf Man, of Freud.- Kurt Lewin's Psychological Life Space

- The American Soldier Section on satisfaction with promotions in the MPs in World War II. Counter Intuitive. What's wrong with common sense? Common sense is just fine, as long as we don't forget what Lear teaches us about knowingness. It's so easy for humans to conclude they're smarter than everyone else. Hubris. Greek tragedy.
- Maria Pia Lara's Moral Textures, on illocutionary discourse.
- Education and Praxis and how crochet fits into that. This piece was removed from the free form instruction sheet as belonging more appropriately in conversations that matter. (ctm)
