  • The Stories Our Flag Tells
A Collaborative Work by Alejandro Sepulveda and Family (CSUDH)

Alejandro Sepulveda's Flag Image for the Exhibition of Fall 2006.

Alejandro took this project home to share with his young son. The university reaches out to the elementary school. Our first project, "Say Hello to a Neighbor," gave his son the confidence to speak past his shyness, and his neighbors the confidence to speak to each other.

  • Violence in Conflict with Love and Caring
    By Yvonne Ramirez, CSUDH

Yvonne Ramirez' Violence in Conflict with Love and Caring

Yvonne did a good job of bringing out the conflict between love and violence, up to and including war. This conflict of values has continued to appear throughout our course.

  • Life in the U.S. Today: Our Flag, Our Values
    By Jason Herrera, CSUDH

Jason Herrera' s Life in the U.S. Today: Our Flag, Our Values. Public Works Art Exhibit: Believe It. Own It. Series 1, Section 1

Here we see conflicts in values writ large across the flag. The stripes run vertically. The field of stars is in the lower-right hand corner. The flag itself is red. And the domestic confusion of divorce and marriage is juxtaposed with the lethal injection of the death penalty. Jason has thus far declined to offer a story grown out of his painting. But I think whatever that story is, it's mirrored in the confusion so many of us feel.

  • Superman Holding Up the Flag. YES.
    By Naoko Takeuchi, CSUDH

Superman Holding Up the Flag. YES.

Superman behind the stripes represents somebody who has power, who tries to help or work for the United States. But what he does leads to war or problems for which the burning land in the star field is a metaphor. For me, the burning land with stars represents also the United States' attempt to control and privatize by exploitation. The stripes of many colors and patterns represent many kinds of people with different kinds of ethnicity and religions. Through the many-patterned stripes I hope all these people can weave together a cloth that is whole. Naoko Takeuchi.
