Index of Topics on Site Index on Habermas, Fall 2006

As primary text this Fall, I'm going to use James Gordon Finlayson's Habermas: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2005. ISBN: 0-19-284095-9. The suggested price for this book is $9.95 in the USA. It's no more than 157 pages, including an index and suggestions for further reading, along with an Appendix of very short summaries of each of Habermas' research programmes. This little text will not make you an expert on Habermas' writings, but it sure will give you a good sense of what he's talking about, why he believes what he does, and how that affects both social theory and our lives today. I strongly urge you to buy and read the little book. It's little. You'll be able to get through it quickly. It reads easily. You'll be able to ask questions and think about which part of his overall philosophy makes sense for you. I'll post lots of discussion questions to help you. I think it will be time well spent.

I didn't order the book. Some of you will not want to read it, or will be afraid of it, or are overcommitted this semester anyway. In such cases, I'd be making you waste $10. I can offer you information; I can summarize and rephrase bits of Habermas. But the will to read and grasp his message of hope for a world in which we could make things better must come from you. At the very least, three of you could buy the book together. $3 a piece. C'mon. What can you lose? Give it a weekend at least and see if it's not worth it.

love and peace, jeanne
