jeanne's Critique

Nice job, Juliette. For the sake of giving this version of our catalogue some coherence, I gave your poster a name. i didn't mean to usurp your rights in that.

In our discussion you spoke of the flag superimposed over a pretty girl, with comments of how we sometimes tend to think that superficially. Good comment. And the use of dollar signs for stars was a felicitous choice of iconology.

In the other flag image, hearts replace the stars and the flag is superimposed over a young man with a gun aimed at a crod of people, some of whom are wearing smiley faces. Lots of messages in there. Michael was particularly intrigued by the smiley faces.

I'll be sure to bring card stock and stamps and all our art paraphernalia next week. Looks like we're way past first drafts. jeanne

Questions and Suggestions

  1. Good technique to cut a simple shape out of the newspaper and outline it with a sharpie. Stamps will help you create the shapes.

  2. Do tell us more about the smiley faces, if there is more to tell.

  3. Did anyone else notice the shape of the gun holder, like a noose? I'll bet that was an accident, but maybe not. Lots of room for interpretatin there. Maybe something Juliette intended. Maybe something the viewer adds interdependently on his/her own.

Peer Comments and Questions

  • You don't have to be original on this. Most of us will appreciate simple compliments. (The equivalent to our "Good dog." - The compliment most of us forget to give, which is why it is so empasized in dog training. People forget to compliment their dogs on good behavior, too.) I'll ask questions and make comments. Let Juliette know if you have those questions, too. Agree or disagree with my comments as you like. jeanne
