One of the Many Voices Out ThereMost of us know best those in our inner circle: our friends, our family, our neighbors. The ideas from which we draw our beliefs and values come from the institutions we frequent everyday: home, neighborhood, school, local community. There may be valid ideas on the East Coast, or in South America, or in Africa, but they don't pop up everyday in our local dominant discourse.
If we come from the recent South, we come from Repulbican strongholds and we're likely to hear mostly Republican ideas. Our dominant discourse is likely to reflect those Republican ideas. If we come from a Democratic stronghold, our dominant discourse is likely to reflect those Democratic ideas. This doesn't mean that either set of common beliefs is "right" or "preferable" to any other set of beliefs. It just mean that we are most likely to believe what we hear everyday repeated by people in our daily context that we like and trust.
That's where the news comes in.
