Index on MentoringWe believe that an important part of deep learning is having several mentors who are willing to listen to your confusion and point a quick way out of it. I remember long hours in school trying to figure what on earth some teachers were talking about. And I am caught in the midst right now of figuring out how to wend my way through updated software programs. It helps to have a friend. This set of files is our attempt to see that such a friend is available throughout our course time, and even if you're not in our courses.
Sometimes jeanne and Pat and Susan can help you themselves. But we're trying very hard right now to expand the outreach of our discourse project, and so you may not always have unlimited access to us. To that end we are going to ask for peer mentors who will help when you have an issue they can help with. We'll also try to arrange for traditional tutoring groups on our campus to help if they have the expertise to do so. You'll need to try different sources, and please let us know how each works. Even if you haven't thought of this before, having someone to turn to when you have questions is a critical skill in team work. Good practice while you're in school.
In getting ready for the Fall, I've had to rely pretty much on my own perceptions for what you need. Most of you are off and away having fun for the summer. When you return, I need your input. You don't want your mentoring to be based solely on your teachers' perceptions of what you need.
Section 1: Computer Literacy
This mentoring guide is designed to let you know fairly specifically what we mean by basic professional computer literacy. You need it for our courses. You need to be sure that we know that you have gained this competency.
- Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) Explanation of how the computer gets the address of the site you want.
- Browsers Explanation of the programs that enable you to pint and click and use graphics.
- E-Mail Explanations on how to send and receive answers for your information and for your records.
