- Concepts We Need to Know
- focal things - things that matter. See Things That Matter The importance of keeping your eye on the ball if you find yourself in a shell game.
- deconstruction - Derrida. Refers to discovering new perspectives from which to understand differences.
- differeand - Derrida. Refers to the fact that human intelligence seems to be able to see only one pattern at a time. If one pattern is familiar to us, we tend not to see others that may well be there, but they blend into the background for us.
- All these concepts are essential to understanding how technology and instant access to information through mass media has the potential to focus us on issue, like a pattern, so that we don't see the other major issues at play. Essays up shortly. This weekend had to go to art techniquest and catching up those who were lost in the beginning. jeanne
Discussion Questions
- Is there theory to explain why Congressman Foley's criminal misadventures got more media play than world crises?
Yes. I'll get the essays up on Thursday, I hope. jeanne
- The Deconstruction Quilt by Lois Shawver. Helpful in understanding Derrida and deconstruction, and that's essential to Things That Matter, one of our readings for the week. jeanne
