They ain't us. . . . Duh! Teaching essay on the difficulty of understanding and accepting our diversity.
Hirschman, Albert O. Rhetoric of Reaction, Summary in Topic of Week For anyone who wishes to build on our skills to rational and respectful dialog on real issues, I strongly recommend using this as a reference book, and practicing how to present and insist upon the listening and careful argument that Prof. Hirschman longs for. jeanne
Teaching essay on the difficulty of understanding and accepting our diversity. (also indexed under "t" for "They ain't us. . . . Duh!" and under "d" for "duh" and our site animated icon for "Duh!". We should probably add new examples dating from 2008, a black President, and the "Tea Party". 04/11/2011, just started setup.
Newly written for CATS who CROCHET - find the old files on the book out of Santa Barbara. Files will be added yet for months. I'll want to get the numbers in solid sequence, but won't be able to do that until we've got most of the file series on this list. For example, I know there are earlier artandfear files, but I need this reference list to see how I spelled them and what the numbering system was. Cleanup on 06/30/2011, jeanne
Have been putting all the links I need to locate into references on this. Will create a new and more appropriate file name someday, like Susan's sometime scarf. jeanne

Hirschman, Albert O. 1991. The Rhetoric of Reaction: Perversity, Futility, Jeopardy. Cambridge, MA: The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press. ISBN 0-674-76867-1 (cloth) and ISBN 0-674-76868-X (paper). An excellent practical discussion of how liberals and conservatives shout at one another without really saying anything. The one-sided argument, par excellence. Mature reading, but worth the effort to understand public discourse as it often takes place, especially in the seats of government.
The script that lets you double click on any word you want defined is not working properly. But the dictionary works very effectively if you type in a word and enter it, either here or on its own site. I'll try to fix this some time this summer, but for now, we've placed it on the Home page and on the first page of each issue. That's so you can always get to the dictionary by going to Current or Previous Issue, or by going to Home. Susan and I need this tool always available. We hope you do too. jeanne and Susan.
