Subject: Scholarships for STUDENT ACTIVISTS
Date: Tue, 08 Jan 2002Description of Qualifications and Applications Process for 2002-03:
Since 1961, the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund has provided need-based grants to student activists who are able to do academic work at the college level and are involved in building the movement for social and economic justice.
Davis-Putter scholars are both graduate and undergraduate students and must be enrolled in an accredited school for the time period covered by their grant. Although US citizenship is not a consideration, applicants must be living in the United States and planning to enroll an accredited program here. There is also a strong preference for grantees who are planning on staying in the United States and building the progressive movement here. Early recipients fought for civil rights, against McCarthyism and for peace in Vietnam.
The maximum grant is $6,000 and may be considerably smaller depending on the applicant's circumstances and the amount of funding available. All of the funds for scholarships come from the contributions of individual donors. Deadlines:
Completed applications and supporting documents -- including a personal statement, financial aid reports, letters of recommendation, transcripts and a photograph -- must be postmarked no later than April 1. Applicants will be notified of our decisions in July. New applications will be available in January and can be secured by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to the Fund's mailing address, using regular mail. Requests for applications must be received by Friday, March 22, 2002.
