Using What's New on the Dear Habermas Site MIRROR SITES: CSUDH - Habermas - UWP California State University, Dominguez Hills Files jeanne has added or amended, by date, with commentary on what she did:
Death Penalty seminar in Monterey this weekend will slow me down, as will my starting work in Ubuntu and Python. Switchin my whole system to Open Source fits with our mission and goals, but means I have a lot of manual reading and relearning to do. Meanwhile, I'll be still working on memory sculptures and conversation groups in our local communities. Will resume the regular weekly schedule as quickly as I can manage the change over. jeanne
Fixed the computer. Now I can get back to mapping materials for the memory sculptures. But the Death Penalty Seminar is coming up next weekend, so please excuse brief hiatus in our criminal justice posts. And I'm trying to switch my system over to Ubuntu - fits much better with our philosophy of teaching. jeanne
May all those who serve today and have served in the past know that we say a prayer of thanks today for their courage, sacrifice, and goodness (Tzedikheit) in keeping us free and safe. jeanne and Susan and all the teachers who have ever loved you.
From an almost-cold and raingy Los Angeles.
Sorry, Susan. I lied. I'm back at the computer. But I quit now, honest. jeanne
Lost this altogether. html program is jumping. am going to need to stop and fix it. Yikes. No time. this might have been when I put up projsugg01.htm. At any rate we haven't lost the files, just the what's new piece. sorry, jeanne
Just realized I thought I had overwritten with the right file, but hadn't. Oh well. That's what I get for rushing this way. jeanne Al lthe links to what was done will be there and working on jcls3102.htm. So it's not as bad as it could have been. But I must get the other servers up. And this is retirement!!??? jeanne
Susan, nothing's working right. Both my graphics tablet and my mouse are jumping like crazy. Couldn't just one thing go wrong at a time? Oy vey!!!! jeanne
Sorry for the hiatus. Schedule overloaded with work in beading, knitting, crochet, sculpture, etc. in planning new projects. jeanne
Happy Mothers' Day
No Issue for Week of February 19 because jeanne is at the Death Penalty Seminar in Monterey. You can reach Pat at jeanne's number or on her cell phone. 323-876-1389 or 310-749-8346 until jeanne gets back next Wednesday.

Introduction to Using What's New on the Dear Habermas Site?
Listed on this site history page, chronologically, are the files of Dear Habermas, as I add or update them. After each file, you'll find, if I haven't been too rushed or lazy, a brief explanation of what I was doing with that file and my explanation to Susan of what I've been doing and how it relates to our project. Basically, this constitutes our daily blog, since Susan and I work collaboratively thousands of miles apart, at different universities. We hope, that by following this chronology, others who wish to teach as we do, in the academic field or in the community, will be able to adapt our work to their own.
The file names are links to the file itself. By using Page Source, you can access the html in which the file was created. We use a Creative Commons license for the site, meaning that you are welcome to use and build on our materials for non-commercial purposes, as long as you grant others the same privilege with the resultant materials. We believe that a much better world will come of sharing and working collaboratively in the whole educational enterprise, which should extend well beyond the institutional infrastructure of brick and mortar school buildings. Learn deeply; teach deeply; and share with others. jeanne and Susan
What the file names here mean:
The relative file name is used for this record. Relative file names work when you stay within our site. From any other site, you will need to add the complete URL identification (i.e. tell the computer what server the file is on) http://oldweb.uwp.edu/academic/criminal.justice/. . . , where the filename goes in the place of the dots ( . . .) . If you're on the Dear Habermas web site, the relative file name will take you to that file on Dear Habermas, whatever server you're using.
If you're on some other web site and wish to access a Dear Habermas file, you need to use the complete URL, which gives first the server, and last, the file name on that server.
For example, the relative file name for what's new on this site is: siteadd.htm
The complete URL for what's new on this site is http://oldweb.uwp.edu/academic/criminal.justice/siteadd.htm because the file is on UWP's old web server.
The Earthlink-hosted site is currently up-to-date, though I still need to put up some old material. The CSUDH-server site is still not updated because we're still working on getting the VPN to work. WE hope to have it done this week. The UWP site has remained current throughout. When I'm working on the site I upload from Earthlink, my main site, to UWP, to CSUDH. This only matters if I'm interrupted and don't manage to get all three mirror sites uploaded at once. The use of mirror sites means that if a file doesn't print from one server, it might at a different server, which saves us lots of time when we need hard copy. jeanne

One of the Pendus (hanged men) from Francois Villon's Ballade des Pendus, written in the 15th Century. Memory: In these times of global crisis, who is indeed the crimnal, who the enforcer? Which of us has not made more possible the crisis in which we all find ourselves? Villon asks us, of each other, to go gently in our judgments, that God may more gently judge us. Good start for 2009, as we struggle out of social justice distress. jeanne

Putting together topic of week as basic issue of campaign: managing risk, development, and debt, as I understand it from books and reading up in the field of finance, in which I am not an expert. But neither are most of us, and even the experts don't agree. Will try to do it in three parts: (1) what's happening, (2) summaries of sources to explain what those who claim to be experts think is happening, and (3) further reading that is available, esp. free, on the internet. My bias is that the traditionally Republican approach of increase the wealth of the rich to give incentives for investment doesn't work. It's rational, but doesn't take into account humane balance, and the living, reathing, working communities in which we live. But neither does the concept of financing growth and healthy development from the worker level, without drastic infrastructure changes. I don't think there is AN ANSWER. These are serious times. Times for us all to comtemplate the mix we think will get us out of this mess in the way fairest to all. And then try to relate that to the election of a new leader. I'll get this up as fast as I can. In the beginning you will find some of the last issue's info still up. Sorry. I can't go any faster. jeanne

New issue up even though the project isn't quite finished. You should bear in mind that I missed the deadline for the dance I was making the bag for. Oh, well. The best laid plans of mice and men . . . and women, too, I guess. Notice that I sent Susan comments on how the project was going, and pictures, so she really does know that I was working. Techers aren't mind readers. Especially not when we have lots of students. Build alternatives into your projects. jeanne

Fabric, right side out, laid on bag form. Had no idea the creation of crocheted fabric could take so long. Should have broken the project into smaller pieces so that I wouldn't have suffered so with the insane deadline I had given myself. Bear this in mind when you choose a project. What pieces will you turn in if you can't finish the whole thing in time? jeanne
Fabric and bag form turned so that you can see the whole fabric by combining the images.

Sunday, September 23, 2007
At last, this seems to be working. This is a light weight Rowan cotton yarn, on a 3.25 mm. steel hook. The fabric is about the right weight and thickness to cover the mesh of the bag form. This is a different kind of free form, like the one I did on the back scrubber (OK, am still doing). I'm scanning it in periodically because you won't be able to see it once I've added the free form motifs and lined the bag. Am trying to be transparent. Guess that marks me as a liberal, hmmm? This is the piece I finished at about 1 a.m. Evonne at the Stitch Cafe was right. It takes longer than you'd think. Off to make the deadline. jeanne
OK, I give up. I frogged the last piece I started with. Don't know how to get the fabric to the right shape without laying the form out flat. Of course, instructions were to stitch sides together, and I had already done that. Duh!! You can't cut knitted or crocheted fabric to shape, so you have to knit it to shape. Using bright red Caron Simply Soft to tack fabric onto form. Easy to untack if I need to. Oh well, at least I'm learning free form freely. jeanne
Will start tomorrow if I finish the Elise bag. Getting desperate. jeanne
Updated.
Saturday, September 22, 2007
Gave up on trying to attach free form motifs to bag form. Instead, am crocheting a fabric with which to cover the form, and will then attach the motifs to the fabric. Nobody mentioned the need to make a crochet fabric before. Maybe nobody's ever done it. Ah, innovation and creativity! jeanne

Picture of Elizabeth Dunn's pop top bracelet from her web site. I know you wown't (I know it's a typo, but it seems prophetic. Think I'll adopt it as a word. jeanne) believe this. But there was a crocheted bag at the Los Angeles County Art Museum for $300 on Saturday, August 11, 2007. It was made of black crochet thread and pop tops! Pop tops in the handles and in parts of the bag, and pop top and crochet flowers! Now, if that doesn't speak of alienation and anomie, I don't know what does. Yeah, I know some people will never realize what it's made of. But that speaks even more of alienation and anomie. jeanne

Our teaching philosophy and where "learning by doing" fits in. Updated.
Updated the template image on learning, and how we choose to do it. jeanne
I added to the image on the template page for essays. What I added was threads and words. I'd been wanting to finish that image for a while, but until now it never came to me what I wanted to add to it. I especially wanted to keep the drawing free, reflecting the visual that speaks of who I am, who we are, as humans learning together, not as "experts" who know it all, but as friends who guide each other in deeper understanding of the world we live in today. jeanne

The circles will include reasons for gathering: art projects, thread projects, journaling projects, and will be matched to our hopefully-balanced information of social, economic, and political issues of the day. There'll be a hard copy printable summary of each issue for those who don't have or want access to a computer, with much deeper and more extensive scholarly analysis on the site for further info if someone wants it. jeanne

Logo link to The Church and Post Modern Culture: Conversation. See Thinking out of the box on this important issue. Remember that arguing rarely convinces people. Try to listen to them in good faith and understand them; in doing that we establish grounds for answerability (Bakhtin) and begin to learn to live with difference. This site is primarily for Christians to talk to Christians, but we have lots of Christians in this country, so it should serve many people who seriously care about their beliefs. Also, people that believe they are "right" have a lot of similarities with other people who believe they are "right." Maybe that will help us understand lots of people, hmmm? jeanne
