jeanne's Statement

Tony, you made a felicitous choice of colors for me. I like them. I know the construction paper is dull, but I wanted us to work out our imagery before we worked with more expensive card stock. The colors will be better there.

I took the liberty of removing your printing for this first version. I have made substitute printing with the computer, and simultaneously corrected the spelling of Taliban. For the exhibit catalog we want things as polished as we can manage because we'll be doing a public exhibition. But I'm not sure that you'll actually want to substiture printing for your handwriting. Let's take a look at it:

Tony's first version of flag drawing with his own printing.

There are times when you want this effect. That's for each of you to decide in accordance with how you feel about the art work.

Tony's first version of flag drawing with computer printing.

Now we're getting closer to commercial and professional art work. If that's the effect you want, this is one way to get it.

Interesting connection you have made with the Taliban. By the way, good phonic spelling of their name when there was no source to check. When I look at that piece as it is displayed, I see a stadium, and it brings to mind the horrible things that went on in some Taliban stadiums. Is that a memory you planned to recall?

If we turn the poster to the right, the piece resembles an American flag with vertical instead of horizontal stripes. (By the way, you have to add an "e" to stripe, otherwise it would sound like "strip" as in "sip.")

I like the mixture of clouds and stars in the star field. That feels to me like a very hopeful, soothing flag image.

And "the cup we all sip," with stars, and with stripes in across and horizontally is intriquing. I can't wait to share more about that. Good work. jeanne

Questions and Suggestions

  1. Even though you mention the Taliban, I don't feel fear or horror displayed here. What message are you sending us about the Taliban? Are you telling us that we may be more like them than we think? Let's talk about that.

  2. I know you told us that you used buildings you found pictured in the newspaper. Did the buildings you chose hold a special significance for you?

  3. Does the cup have a religiious significance? Or could the cup's relation to breaking bread together be what you had in mind?

  4. There is a mixture of different messages that I see in this grouping. Do you want them to be just a bouquet of messages, or do you want to tie them together into an overall message that might give us a title for your page?

Peer Comments and Questions

  • You don't have to be original on this. Most of us will appreciate simple compliments. (The equivalent to our "Good dog." - The compliment most of us forget to give, which is why it is so empasized in dog training. People forget to compliment their dogs on good behavior, too.) I'll ask questions and make comments. Let Tony know if you have those questions, too. Agree or disagree with my comments as you like. jeanne
